Power and the Grid Are AI’s Real Bottleneck

AI’s real bottleneck is not only chips. It is power and the grid.

If policymakers are tying grid infrastructure to national defense, that is a signal: policy, capital, and contracts are moving toward the physical system behind the next technology cycle.

The money flows first to the scarce layers:

Transformers and high-voltage equipment.

Transmission buildout and conductors.

Grid automation and software.

The suppliers that make new capacity possible.

Utilities matter, but the most asymmetric opportunities may be the companies selling the picks and shovels into a massive infrastructure shortage. AI, reshoring, electric vehicles, and defense are all competing for the same constrained grid.

The thesis is simple: compute can be designed faster than electricity can be delivered. Whoever owns the bottleneck owns the next leg of the buildout.
