Headline GDP contracted 0.3% annualized in the first quarter, but the details were stronger than the headline suggested.
Imports surged as businesses front-ran tariffs, creating a large drag on the calculation. Government spending also fell, while private investment rose sharply and consumer demand remained resilient.
That mix matters. A temporary trade-related distortion is different from a broad-based private-sector contraction. The economy can post weak headline growth while the underlying productive sectors strengthen.
